Ken's Quick Answer:

If your basement has a flood, one of the first things to ask yourself is whether you think you might have water problems again. To avoid an endless cycle of flooring replacement, we recommend glue down luxury vinyl plank or porcelain tile in higher risk areas.

Ken's In-Depth Answer:

Today, I want to tell you about flooded basements. The last time I talked to you about basements, I focused on how flood insurance may not always cover your floors. Today, I want to talk to you about selecting flooring after your basement has been flooded.

I had a client come in who had to rip out all the luxury vinyl plank in their basement because the water meter leaked. After I looked at the basement, I had questions. That included whether they were worried about having any water problems in the future. Or if they had flooding issues in the past. We determined that there was a risk of future water problems.

I told them they shouldn't buy a click together luxury vinyl plank product, because the water can just go right underneath and produce mold. They only had two choices: glue-down luxury vinyl plank and porcelain tile. (Porcelain tile is about twice as expensive, but ensures your floor will stand up to water in the future.)

When I go into any situation, especially a basement, I want to find out what the situation is and what the best product will be moving forward into the future. At Island Carpet, we will ask those questions. Make sure you find a reputable dealer who will ask those same questions to you.
