"Chair mats are ugly. But, they’re also needed to protect your carpet!"
Ken's In-Depth Answer:
"Today, I’m holding up a chair mat. It’s not to protect me—it’s to protect my carpet!
Why am I talking about chair mats? Well, we’re working from home more often than we used to. (Or, at least, many of us are.) With that in mind, you may have a rolling chair that sits atop carpet in your home office.
What happens when you roll a chair back and forth over carpet? It wrecks the carpet! Your carpet will flatten and wear out. Even if you have commercial carpet or carpet tile, rolling chairs are destructive.
So, if you are working from home or have a home office, you’ve got to use a chair mat. Yes, it’s ugly. Yes, it’s plastic. Yes, it gets all scratched up. (When it gets all scratched up, throw it away and go buy a new one at Staples like I did, today.)
