Back in the dark ages, bevels were necessary for pre-finished hardwood—preventing subtle height differences between boards from sticking out out like a sore thumb. But today, they’re purely added for aesthetic reasons. We’re always happy to show you a bevy of bevel examples to help you decide.
I want to talk to you today about the bevel. That's right, B-E-V-E-L. If you look at hardwood, laminate or luxury vinyl floors, you will (many times) see a distinct line between the boards.
A long time ago, when installing raw wood was common, you would sand it and stain it. That meant there was no reason for a bevel. Any subtle overwood (subtle height differences between boards) were smoothed down by sanding. But that's not true for pre-finished wood—you can't sand it. Overwood was a concern and that's why they invented the bevel.
You don't have to have a bevel if you don't want to. So if you're in the market for hardwood, laminate, or luxury vinyl plank floors, your dealer will be happy to walk you through your bevel options.
