Everybody is lamenting the imminent demise of carpet. We're not giving up on it. There's one room where carpet should still be king.
The right answer depends on where in the house you are and how the room gets used.
Bedrooms should always be carpet. For stairs and family rooms, it's worth considering — especially if you have kids playing on the floor. By the time you reach the bedroom, most debris is off your feet and the case for carpet is easy.
In rooms with spills, pets, muddy shoes, and daily traffic, hard surface floors hold up better and are easier to keep clean. Hardwood, vinyl plank, and tile all outperform carpet here.
One of our favorite carpets was recently discontinued. Ken talks through why carpet is losing ground in some rooms and why the bedroom is still the last great outpost for it.
One of our favorite carpets this year was something called Mykonos. It was a product from Mannington's Phenix division. Unfortunately, Mannington has decided to cease all residential carpet operations. The carpet we liked so much is no longer available.
This is becoming more and more common. Instead of carpet, people choose wood, tile, or luxury vinyl plank. It's easier to maintain and keep clean. There aren't the same durability issues. We understand all that.
However, there is one place in your home where we think carpet should still be king. That's the bedroom.
Typically, by the time you've entered the front door and climbed the stairs, most of the debris is off your feet. You won't have as much mud and dirt once you reach the upper hall and the bedroom. Chances are you'll be able to keep a bedroom carpet cleaner than carpets anywhere else in the house.
The real virtue of carpet in the bedroom is that it's soft and warm. How do you want to feel when you get out of bed in the morning? Do you want to put your feet on a cold floor? That's the real question.
There's also an argument for carpet in family rooms, especially if you have kids playing on the floor. But for spills and pets, hard surface holds up better. Kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways have always been a poor fit for carpet, and that hasn't changed.
